Leading Ladies

At a meeting of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges (AoMRC) back in 2022 the call was raised that we must do more to enhance opportunities for women in our wider healthcare profession. The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) and the RCSEd answered that call.

On 27 and 28 April we brought our professions together over both campuses to hear from powerful leaders in other professions about how to tackle the challenges faced by women in the workplace.

The inaugural AoMRC Women in Leadership conference was an exciting concept for the College, one that shone the spotlight on the fact that women in leadership should be celebrated. It was an inspirational two days and a great coming together of professions. We can’t stop here, however – we must collectively push forward and use this as a jumping-off point for more activity to help support our female colleagues who want to progress in their career and become leaders of the future. Clare McNaught, RCSEd Vice-President, is pulling together a wider group to lead the way and action some of these key issues that will make an impact for women in the future.

In the last edition of Surgeons’ News, Clare McNaught shared her thoughts on the conference. This time around, we are sharing some key takeaways, highlights and overall thoughts that came directly from delegates. This feedback is vital, as it will help shape future events organised by the College – on both an individual and collaborative basis – to improve our offerings.A

What the attendees said...

"I would just like to express my thanks to the RCPE and RCSEd for such a fantastic and well-organised event. I was truly moved and inspired by some of the stories told and the presentations given. I hope there can be events like this again and that as a result change happens."

"The whole topic of women in leadership and work is so important. I liked that women from other workforces were incorporated, as this shines a light into what we can learn from others and not just in medicine."

"Excellent themed conference, and it was good to hear from a combination of speakers from healthcare and business. The best non-clinical CPD in a long time."

"This was the best conference I have ever been to. Full of incredibly inspiring women sharing their story and uplifting others, empowering the audience to take a lot home to their own workplace and be a force for implementing change."

"It is so surprising how many common strings in our experiences we can find, regardless of age, origin or pathways of our lives."

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"

"It was lovely to meet both medical and surgical colleagues, including peers who I have not seen for years since university. The warmth in the room was wonderful with an ambience of kindness and support. This was an important and wonderful conference, and I sincerely hope it ends up being an annual meeting. Thank you very much."
